IMPACT PROJECT!
Reviving Ghanaian Indigenous Games
SportDrive, in partnership with the University of Ghana’s Department of Physical Education and Sport Studies, is leading efforts to institutionalize Ghanaian indigenous games. By piloting programs in schools across the Central and Greater Accra regions, the initiative preserves cultural heritage while restructuring and integrating traditional games into the school curriculum.
The Sankofa Challenge COVID-19 Lockdown Initiative
During the COVID-19 lockdown, SportDrive launched the Sankofa Challenge to revive interest in traditional games and promote physical and mental well-being. Ghanaians participated by playing games like Ampe, Oware, Tumatu, and Ludu at home, sharing videos on social media. This campaign fostered family bonding, alleviated boredom, and educated the public on COVID-19 prevention while celebrating Ghanaian culture.
International KhoKho Coaching Camp, India
SportDrive participated in an International Coaching Camp in New Delhi, India, to study the structure and promotion of India’s traditional game “KhoKho.” Drawing parallels with Ghana’s “anto-ekyire,” the team developed frameworks for enhancing indigenous games in Ghana. This cross-cultural learning supports the growth and institutionalization of traditional sports.
Volunteer Opportunities and Community Service
SportDrive has offered valuable volunteer opportunities, engaging youth in sports events to promote community service and leadership skills. Volunteers supported prestigious events like the International Tennis Federation Junior World Circuit Tour (2018-2021), the Ghana Universities Sports Association (GUSA) Games (2020), and the African Women’s Cup of Nations (2018), showcasing SportDrive’s expertise in high-level event facilitation.
Facilitators for Camp Abilities Ghana
As part of the global Camp Abilities initiative, SportDrive served as facilitators for the first-ever Camp Abilities in Africa, held in Ghana. This one-week educational sports camp provided children aged 9 to 19 with disabilities one-on-one instruction in sports and life skills. The camp empowered children from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds, fostering inclusion and skill development.
Collaboration with the Alliance for African Partnership (AAP)
SportDrive partnered with Michigan State University’s Alliance for African Partnership to integrate entrepreneurship and life skills into youth sports programs. At the University of Ghana, the initiative achieved significant impact by empowering youth through sports education and fostering leadership skills.
