International Kho Kho Coaching Camp, India: Advancing Traditional Sports Development

In early 2020, SportDrive had the unique opportunity to participate in the International Kho Kho Coaching Camp, organized by the Asian Kho Kho Federation. The camp took place from February 23 to March 14 at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium Complex in New Delhi, India. This initiative brought together players and coaches from various countries to enhance their skills and promote the development of Kho Kho on a global scale. For SportDrive, this cross-cultural exchange provided valuable insights into the structure and promotion of India’s traditional game, “Kho Kho,” while drawing parallels with Ghana’s indigenous game, “anto-ekyire.”

Supporting the Institutionalization of Indigenous Games

As part of the camp, SportDrive collaborated with international experts to study the rules, strategies, and frameworks used to elevate Kho Kho as a recognized competitive sport. These lessons became instrumental in developing similar frameworks to promote and institutionalize indigenous games in Ghana, furthering the mission to preserve cultural heritage while fostering mass sports participation.

High-Performance Assessment and Scientific Training in Kho Kho

Later in 2020, the Kho Kho Federation of India (KKFI), in partnership with Ultimate Kho Kho (UKK), launched an innovative High-Performance Assessment and Scientific Analysis & Evaluation Programme titled “Rise in Sports Excellence.” This initiative marked a milestone in the scientific training of Kho Kho players, integrating modern methodologies to elevate the sport’s competitive standards.

The program commenced with a 30-day national coaching camp on January 19, 2021, inaugurated by India’s Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju. Hosted at the Manav Rachna Sports Science Centre in Faridabad and SGT University in Gurugram, the camp brought together 138 athletes, including 18 women, for rigorous training and scientific evaluations. These assessments covered:

  • Sports Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation
  • Injury Management
  • Biomechanics and Biokinetics
  • Performance Analysis
  • Nutritional Guidance
  • Posture Correction

By incorporating cutting-edge techniques, the program aimed to create a pool of elite Kho Kho players equipped to excel in international competitions.

Impact on Kho Kho Development

These initiatives reflect a concerted effort to enhance the global profile of Kho Kho through structured training and scientific methodologies. The International Coaching Camp and subsequent programs by KKFI and UKK demonstrate how blending tradition with innovation can pave the way for the growth of indigenous games both nationally and internationally.

For SportDrive, participating in the Kho Kho Coaching Camp was a transformative experience that not only broadened its understanding of sports development but also reinforced its commitment to preserving and promoting indigenous games in Ghana. This partnership between nations highlights the universal power of sports to bridge cultures and inspire global collaboration.
