Reviving Culture and Staying Active: The Sankofa Challenge by SportDrive

In March 2020, the Covid-19 pandemic swept across the globe, disrupting daily life and halting activities in nearly every sector, including sports and physical education. For SportDrive, the crisis presented unique challenges, especially as the organization had just returned from India after attending a workshop on cultural exchange in the development of indigenous games. The pandemic’s restrictions, including school closures and bans on contact sports, brought most outdoor activities to a standstill. However, adversity often breeds innovation, and SportDrive rose to the occasion with a creative initiative: the Sankofa Challenge.

The Birth of the Sankofa Challenge

Faced with the inability to organize physical education programs and community sports activities, SportDrive devised the Sankofa Challenge to adapt to the new normal. Inspired by the Ghanaian word Sankofa, which means “go back and take,” the challenge aimed to promote Ghanaian indigenous games while encouraging physical activity in a safe, socially distanced way. The goal was simple yet powerful: reconnect families with their cultural roots and foster active lifestyles within the confines of their homes.

Participants were encouraged to revisit indigenous games such as ampe, pilolo, chaskele, and oware. These traditional games, cherished for their simplicity and cultural significance, became a source of joy, connection, and nostalgia for families locked down together. Leveraging the power of social media, SportDrive invited participants to share their gameplay experiences using hashtags like:

  • #SpreadCalmNotFears
  • #PlayaGame
  • #StayActive
  • #SankofaChallenge

A Community United by Tradition

The Sankofa Challenge quickly gained momentum on platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. Families posted videos and photos of themselves engaging in traditional games, turning their living rooms and backyards into makeshift playgrounds. This digital campaign not only entertained but also provided an emotional outlet during a time of uncertainty and isolation.

The challenge resonated across generations. For older participants, it was a nostalgic journey back to their childhood, while for younger participants, it was an opportunity to learn and appreciate the cultural heritage of Ghana. The Sankofa Challenge became a bridge between the past and the present, reinforcing the value of Ghanaian traditions in modern life.

Promoting Physical and Mental Well-Being

Beyond its cultural impact, the Sankofa Challenge played a critical role in promoting physical and mental health during the pandemic. The games encouraged movement, agility, and coordination while helping participants combat sedentary behavior caused by lockdown restrictions. They also provided an avenue for stress relief and emotional well-being, fostering a sense of unity and joy in challenging times.

A Legacy of Resilience

The success of the Sankofa Challenge showcased SportDrive’s ability to adapt and innovate in the face of adversity. By blending tradition with technology, the initiative highlighted the versatility and enduring appeal of indigenous games. It also underscored SportDrive’s commitment to preserving cultural heritage while addressing contemporary challenges.

As the world gradually recovers from the pandemic, the Sankofa Challenge stands as a testament to the power of creativity, resilience, and community. SportDrive remains dedicated to championing indigenous games as a vital part of Ghana’s sports and cultural identity, ensuring that these cherished traditions continue to thrive for generations to come.

Looking Ahead

SportDrive plans to integrate the Sankofa Challenge into its ongoing initiatives, expanding its reach to schools, communities, and international audiences. By combining education, physical activity, and cultural preservation, the challenge represents a blueprint for how organizations can inspire meaningful change through sports and tradition.

The Sankofa Challenge may have emerged from a time of crisis, but its legacy will endure as a celebration of Ghanaian culture, a promoter of active lifestyles, and a unifier of communities. Through this initiative, SportDrive has reaffirmed its mission to transform lives and preserve the rich cultural heritage of Ghana.
